2003 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 1
Run Report for December 14, 2003
How do you describe the dedication and tenacity of athletes that love running the steep trails of the North Shore in the deep throws of winter? With words like tough, persistent, desire, determination, and phrases like "I enjoy a good challenge" and "never say die!". For the 20 people and 1 dog that came out for the inaugural Pure Satisfaction Run these words and more are accurate descriptors. I put this event together to celebrate both the desire and the ability of like-minded people to run the rough Baden Powell Trail under tough winter conditions and also for those runners to revel in the pure satisfaction of their own desire and determination.
I was surprised to find the darkness pervading the parking lot as I pulled in to Panorama Park at 07:30h. Not to mention the rain pelting and hardly a soul in site. But before I knew it, the rain subsided (for a while) and the runners were beginning to trickle in. Waivers were signed under cover of my Sienna's trunk door and brightness of my tiny flashlight. People were steadying themselves in the drissling weather and dismayed by the washrooms being still locked. Only one dog showed up but "Toro" seemed completely indifferent to the whole matter and I'm sure just wanted to get going with Cheryl.
The run briefing at 8:04 was necessarily brief due to the once again pelting precip. With instructions to the newbies about the BP signposts and some intense warning about the slippery roots, especially on the Hyannis to Riverside section, I sent the runners off into the somewhat lighter, but still wet, hills. The plan was to run from Deep Cove to the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and the Lynn Canyon Café where our volunteers, Anne-Marie and Monty, would be with support and treats. Eventually, some would do just the trip to Lynn Canyon as planned and others would return to Deep Cove for the complete 24.2 Km trip. On the other hand, some would stumble and take alternate routes to make things more challenging for themselves. This was indeed one of the main risks on such a crooked trail but certainly rewarding if you could make it out under your own steam regardless. I know that Kathy and Mike never did see Lynn Canyon although they saw lots of other trails besides the BP. And Gord managed to slip into a taxi after emerging at the bottom of Lillooet Road. Thanks Gord for driving back to Lynn Canyon and letting me know what became of you.
There was apparently another, and much shorter, running event going on in the Seymour area as well as ours. There were some reports that their marshals were less than accommodating to our runners and for some reason felt they had exclusive use of the trails that day. Ahem.
At about 10:20h I sent our volunteers off on their own one way run to the Cove from Lynn Canyon and waited for a while with Ean and his 2 kids to see if more runners would show up. Ultimately Ean was able to meet up with his 3 jubilant 11.1 Km runners, Sibylle, Patricia, and Lesley. Along with Teryl who had arrived earlier, I then drove Lesley and myself back to the start line. And as we got out of my van there most of the other runners had either returned or were just coming in. Casey I think must have sprinted the whole way as he was patiently waiting in his car and thankfully the remaining wandering souls found their way back cold but in one piece.
Major congratulations to those that completed the full return trip on course, Casey, Bill, Scott, Laddie, Stewart, Debbie, Keith and Julie. They all knew the route very well or at least knew to hang out with other experienced BP types. Also big smiles for everyone else that did as they planned or simply came out for some great exercise one way or the other. I hope everyone brought some dry clothes to change into and was warmed up quickly ... I know it took some of you a while to warm up.
Après run, most of us squeezed into Honey Doughnuts for hot beverages and some well deserved food and reaffirmed why we all come out that day ... for some excitement and friendship. And for the pure satisfaction.
see you next year!
