2010 - Squamish B2B

Report: There was much activity at Brennan Rec Centre in Squamish on Saturday:  The Test of Metal bike race, the BC Highland Gathering, and of course the Back-to-Back training runs for the Stormy trail ultra.  Seven of us ran the Saturday route, which included the first 45% of the Stormy course.  Some were training for Stormy.  Tom and Duncan were also getting ready for Transrockies this summer.  Jason Eads took his training seriously enough to fly out from St Louis, Missouri and train on the course.  Timing this morning was perfect as we ran down Perth drive just in time to watch the first few hundred of the 1000 bike racers go by.  Another highlight was hearing all the bagpipers of the Highland Gathering practice as we finished the run.

Sunday we picked up where we left off and did the rest of the Stormy course except for Nine Mile Hill.  Imre and Wendy Montgomery (Stormy race director) came out and made sure that everyone ran with someone who knew how to navigate the many trails that make up the course.  A big thanks to both of you!  And thanks to everyone else who came out for either or both days.

2009 - Squamish B2B

Saturday, 27 June -  Starter Photo

Sunday - 28 June - Starter Photo

Report:

We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather for the second year of the Back to Back STORMY training run.  We had a great group of participants show up from as far away as Ottawa, Bellingham and Victoria.  Some were training for the STORMY 50 or 100, some for other events like the Mont Blanc 100 and pacing at Badwater, and some showed up just to enjoy running the great trails Squamish has to offer.  (I was there just to see if I could still run after five weeks of a femur injury).  Most did the prescribed course, which totaled 68 km for the weekend.  A couple added extra mileage:  Ward ran back to the start after the first km or two to retrieve his new Garmin from on top of his car, and Thierry (an alternate for the recent 100k world championships) ran at least an extra 5k by running back and forth between the two groups of runners.  Participants spotted one bear cub and I came across one large black bear.  But alas, no cougar sighting (I’ve seen lots of bears on the trails, but no big cats).  However there was one animal attack:  Imre’s dog got a little too excited, jumped up on him, and drew blood!  Thanks for coming out everyone.  And thank you Imre for stashing water along the course and guiding the "chase pack".  And thanks also to our sponsors (Trail Runner, Kinesys, Kintec) who provided the prizes to hand out after the event.

2008 Results - Squamish B2B

Sunday

Sunday Runners (Left to Right): Rick, Steve, Carlos, Tim, Rea, Bill and Dave

Saturday Runners (Left to Right): Melody, Jamie, JP, Rea, Carlos, Baldwin, Julie, Sukhi, Bill, Dave and Steve.

Well, I volunteered to host my first CFA event, and got off to a great start by not showing up! An inflamed tendon, (probably something to do with completing two 100 km races last month) meant I was happy to accept Bill Dagg’s offer to lead the Stormy training run Saturday. Thanks Bill! Eleven showed up including Carlos from Victoria, and Julie all the way from Seattle. Julie ended her run a bit early after a fall required her to visit a clinic for some stitches. Baldwin and Carlos decided to run a bit extra, after missing a couple of key turnoffs, and managed to find other parts of the course to deviate from. They ran 6:33. The rest ran 38 km, with the first runner coming in at 4:11.

I showed up Sunday for part two of the Brick, a 28 km run taking in the rest of the Stormy course minus the Nine Mile Hill loop. Bill Dagg and Rick Arikado finished first at 3:23, with the rest of us not too far behind. I ran about half this with the six runners who did the run, missing out on the bear sighting. The tendon flared up and I discovered that hopping on one leg down technical trails doesn’t work too well. Rea, a nurse, was kind enough to provide an ice pack at the finish which was greatly appreciated. By the end, the sun had come out, which made for a pleasant drive back to Vancouver after the usual post-event party at the Howe Sound Brew Pub.

Here is Carlos' video of the weekend:

The Squamish "B2B"

This past week-end Ms.J and I, went to Squamish to take part in a training camp over two days. This kind of back-to-back session is know as a "Brick". A group of "fatassers" had planned to run. The first part one day , and the second part the next. This would be on a 50 mile course of an up coming race , the "Stormy 50 mile and 100 mile Ultra marathon". I am registered to run the 100 miler so I figured that it would be an ideal chance to familiarise myself with the terrain. That it was! I ended up running my 10 hours per week of running in two days. ILTS!

2007 Results - Squamish B2B

23 June 2007 - 7 Starter (Wendy, Tracy and Ryan are missing on the starter photo)

In 2007 the Stormy Brick was not yet established as a scheduled event.  Please find below the results of the Beyond Nine Mile event, which morphed into The Brick in 2008.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who came out and participated in the first running of “Beyond 9-Mile”.

We were lucky as the rain held off for most of the run with the exception of a few sprinkles here and there.

Congratulations to Tracy Garneau who not only ran 18 km of the CFA event, but headed up to Whistler and won the women’s division of Comfortably Numb on Sunday.

Tim, Rick and Gilles showed how tough they truly are by completing the entire route including the long pull up 9-mile hill.   All three men and Tracy are signed up to compete in the STORMY 100 mile solo in August.

Ryan Conroy, who was suffering from a bit of an injury managed to finish more than 18km of the course. I believe Ryan has signed up for the Canadian Death Race August 4-7 in Alberta.  I wish him luck and hope to see him at STORMY 2008.

I managed to convince Maureen to join me on the 15km course. We had a great time as we chatted and enjoyed the sites and sounds of the trail.

Both Maureen and Ryan received bonus points for their collection of garbage along the route. Maureen found some shell casings and Ryan found an array of items during his run.

We finished off the day with a lunch at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub.
